Responsibilities

GUARD is seeking an actuarial professional to join our growing Actuarial team. This position is open at either the Actuarial Assistant or Actuarial Analyst level and will be filled based on the selected candidate's experience, actuarial exam progress, technical skills, and overall qualifications.

 

In this role, you will contribute to core actuarial reserving and/or pricing activities that support informed business decision-making and financial stability across our commercial insurance portfolio. Working closely with actuarial team members and business partners, you will assist with pricing and/or reserve analyses, data preparation and validation, financial reporting support, actuarial research, and process improvement initiatives. The position offers opportunities to develop technical expertise, gain exposure to key business functions, and continue progressing toward Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) credentials in a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.

 

Actuarial Assistant

 

What You'll Do:

  • Collaborate with business partners (e.g., Claims, Underwriting, Product) to support pricing, filings, and profitability work; ask questions to understand how assigned work ties to business priorities
  • Support actuarial analyses for assigned lines (e.g., workers’ compensation and/or commercial auto), including data preparation, basic rate level indication support, trend summaries, and segmentation studies.
  • Support rate and regulatory filings by assembling exhibits, summaries, and supporting documentation; ensure results tie out and are review-ready
  • Use actuarial techniques and available tools (e.g., Excel, data extraction/query tools, internal systems) to extract, validate, manipulate, and analyze data, with hands-on support and review
  • Complete assigned tasks accurately within established timelines; communicate questions, issues, or delays early
  • Maintain clear documentation and workpapers so another analyst can understand, recreate, and review the work product
  • Perform peer review of other assistant/analyst work as assigned, focusing on basic checks (reasonableness, tie-outs, completeness, and documentation)
  • Participate actively in team and department meetings by asking questions, sharing observations, and providing status updates as needed
  • Pursue ongoing professional development through consistent progress toward actuarial exams

 

Actuarial Analyst

What you'll Do: 

  • Complete basic actuarial analysis related to pricing and/or reserving.
  • Collaborate within the team to develop and maintain actuarial tools and processes to improve the quality and efficiency of actuarial analyses.
  • Implement methodology enhancements and process efficiencies within the department.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation that allows another actuarial staff member to understand and recreate the work product.
  • Assist with industry research and studies to support actuarial projects.
  • Perform basic data preparation, balancing, and reasonability checks using SQL or other data tools to support actuarial analyses and reporting requirements.
  • Analyze data and trends to uncover solutions to business challenges.
  • Create actuarial reports summarizing analysis results and communicate within the department.
  • Provide peer review and technical feedback to support team development.

Qualifications

Actuarial Assistant

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, actuarial science, or related field
  • At least 1-2 CAS exams are strongly preferred. Prior internship or relevant P&C pricing experience are a plus
  • Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy and reliability of results
  • Ability to communicate results and assumptions
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data and model results
  • Results-oriented with the ability to adjust priorities when necessary
  • IT and statistical skills are highly valued. Knowledge of SQL is preferred; VBA & Python skills are a plus

Actuarial Analyst

  • Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or a related field with a strong mathematics background
  • Minimum 2 years of actuarial experience, with commercial lines exposure preferred

  • Successful completion of 2 or more exams from the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS)

  • Ability to communicate results and assumptions

  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data and model results

  • Technical skills are highly valued. Strong Microsoft Excel skills required, and knowledge of SQL and Power BI are preferred; VBA, Python, or other programming skills are a plus.

 

Salary Range:

Depending on experience and qualifications, we are open to hiring at one of the following levels:

 

Actuarial Assistant: $60,000-$80,000

Actuarial Analyst: $70,000-$110,000

 

In accordance with applicable pay transparency laws, the salary ranges listed above represent good‑faith estimates for each level. Final leveling, title, and compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, credentials, geographic location, and other considerations permitted by law.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship requirements.

New York City, NY; Conshohocken, PA; Scottsdale, AZ; Wilkes-Barre, PA

This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in one of our offices, with travel as needed.
